While at North Carolina head coach Butch Davis is riding pretty high, looking around at one of my favorite web sits, Coaches Hot Seat, you can see that two other coaches in the Atlantic Coast Conference can not say the same. While of course this site isn't what makes coaches get booted from their job, I have to say they seem to be pretty "on spot" for how much pressure is on these coaches.
Coming in third on the ranking is Al Groh from Virginia. He is an alumni of the Cavaliers, but that isn't going to help him much, especially when he is making close to 2 millions a year. Right now the team is 1-3, losing to Duke last week 31-3, and with a surprising Maryland and an up & down ECU coming up Groh needs two wins to have any chance of staying on past the 2008 season. But even winning those two wins might not be enough, as the Cavs last three games are: Wake Forest (away), Clemson (home) and Va Tech (away).
Some seats behind, coming at the seventh spot, is Tommy Bowden (Clemson). With how Alabama is playing, maybe the head coach of the Tigers could have been forgiven for week one's 34-10 loss. But now, with the fan base already feeling that this team is underachieving, Bowden and his squad lost to a very winnable Maryland team. This isn't going down well for the people around this program, and at $ 2,250,000 a season, they do deserve better than this. With Wake Forest coming up, who needs to rebound from a bad game, Clemson can ill afford to go 3-3 half way through the season. After these two head coaches there isn't any sign of an ACC presence for a while. The next one showing up on the list, coming in 35th, from the web site is Tom O'Brien, from NC State, who is right now 2-3 for the season. For anyone interested, "Coaches Hot Seat" has Butch Davis as the 76th coach on the list. With the way the Heels have played this season I would say that Davis is very, very safe from any hot seat whatsoever. We shall see if this site is once again on the mark with their predictions for the two coaches.
