I know that this is a Syracuse blog, but those that know me pretty well know that I am one of those that does like ESPN and also one that has always been behind the Jimmy V Foundation. Now, with my father-in-law having cancer I'm even more behind the foundation that Jim Valvano began over a decade ago. (On a side note, if you are ever having a down day, listen to his ESPY's speech as he talks to a packed house while full of cancer).
On Wednesday, July 16th ESPN Radio will be hosting their fourth annual auction. ESPN Radio, The V Foundation and Team ESPN are hoping to make it even bigger than 2007's edition where over $800,000 was raised. I hope that all of you that are reading this can donate, be it a dollar or more, remembering that cancer is not a one person disease, it affects everyone in the family.
Having said all of that I wanted to also mention that one of the new prizes for this year is that Mike & Mike in the Morning are going to come to the winner's house. Yes, Greenberg and Golic will do a full show from the winner's house, for four hours, just like they would do in Studio E. This to me is a great prize for the winner, but man o man, having Greeny and Golic in your house might be a lot less of a prize than you think.
Greeny would probably show up hours before the show (and remember they do go on the air at 6:00 am EST) and start spraying your household down to kill any and all germs that might be there. And while you are watching that Mike turn your home into a hospital like setting, the other Mike will be clearing out your refrigirator. So, lock your food up, call a commercial cleaning outfit, and then go for the big prize! I know that I cannot ever have this prize (since I have to believe this will go for over $20K), but this has to be a great gift for someone that's into sports.
Not to be a bulletin board for the V Foundation or ESPN, there is also another prize involving Mike and Mike. This time the winner will get to watch an hour of the show live from the studio and then have breakfast with the two co-hosts and finally go on a tour of ESPN. I had to mention this because when I read of this one (including once again Mike Golic) I had to laugh that part of the prize was having breakfast with him. Hopefully he will be able to behave and not eat the winner's food as well!
Kidding aside, I have to say this, whatever the winner's bid is ESPN doesn't get one penny for it, and moving the whole crew to someone's house to do the show is not going to be a cheap trip. So remember, if you can, give something to this great cause, remembering that every single cent donated goes towards fighting cancer. And let me end this blog the way Jimmy V would... "Don't give up, don't ever give up!"
