This was definitely not the way that the Diamond Heels wanted to begin their reign as the consensus number one team in the land. North Carolina (45-11) kicked off their ACC Tournament on the wrong foot as they lost to Virginia (37-19) by the score of 8 to 7. It was a great game, with the Heels coming back in both the 9th and 10th innings when UVa had scored to go ahead. Unfortunately UNC could not do the same in the eleventh and the Cavs would win the game.On the mound for Carolina was Alex White, who went seven innings, allowing 3 runs (just 1 earned) on three hits and four walks. The righty also struck out 11 Cavaliers. Rob Wooten took over and pitched two innings for UNC, giving up two runs (one earned) on one hit, one walk and two strikeouts. After Wooten it was Brian Moran's turn on the mound. He pitched for 0.2 inning, giving up 1 run on 2 hits and 1 walk. Moran struck out 1 Cavalier as well. Finally Colin Bates (6-1) took the hill for the Tar Heels, giving up 2 runs (both earned) on 1 hit and taking the loss for Carolina in this first game of the round robin tournament.
As far as the batters for the Heels, it was Chad Flack, the best of the bunch, going 3 for 6 with one RBI and two runs. Tim Federowicz, Dustin Ackley, Tim Fedroff, Seth Williams and Garrett Gore all had two hits each for the Heels. In all Carolina had eight hitters getting a total of 15 hits. UNC also had two walks while striking out 15 times on the day. Even worse might be the fact that the team left 9 players on the base path, something you hate to see when you lose by 1 run.
The game began with UVa scoring twice in the first inning and then knocking out another run in the second inning. UNC came back in the bottom of the second with two runs of their own and when the third and fourth innings passed scoreless, the game is 3 to 2 for the Cavs going into the fifth inning. A run in the fifth and another in the sixth put the Heels up by one, 4-3, but after two more scoreless innings the roller coaster ride began. In the top of the ninth Virginia scored two runs and went ahead 5 to 4. Carolina scored once in the bottom of the inning, tying up the game at 5 and going to extra innings. Top of the 10th UVa scores once, going ahead 6 to 5, but UNC replies in the bottom of the inning and ties up the game at 6 all. In the eleventh the Cavaliers scored twice more going up 8 to 6 and when the Tar Heels went up to bat they could only get one run back, losing the game by the score of 8 to 7.
The Heels have the day off today and will try to get back on track against Wake Forest tomorrow night at 8:00 p.m. EST. They will then face Florida State on Saturday. Both games are now must wins if Carolina wants to have any chance of advancing to the tournament's final game.
