UNC wins a close one and takes series from FSU

. Monday, April 28, 2008

Two power houses had met for two games so far. The first game went to #2 North Carolina (38-8, 18-5 in the ACC) thanks to a late rally, while the second one went to visiting Florida State (35-7, 19-5 in the ACC). Both were blowouts, something no one expected when two teams such as these met up. Well, the rubber game of the series gave everyone what they thought they would be watching between UNC and FSU, a 2 to 1 extra inning thriller, where the guest team would win it in the tenth after being down by one and tying it up in the seventh.

The Heels would send three pitchers to the mound, starting with Matt Harvey who would give up the only run to the Seminoles in 4.2 innings. He would also give up one hit and six walks, as well as striking out five Seminoles. Brian Moran would then take over for 3.1 innings, allowing two hits and no base on balls, while getting one K. to close out the deal Rob Wooten would come in, going 2 full innings, for 1 hit, one walk and picking up his third win of the season.

The bats were pretty quiet for the Heels, who only managed to get three hits, plus three walks and were left at the plate three times as well. Kyle Seager was the main force of the Heels, going 2 for 4 with one RBI in the game. The other RBI belonged to DH Mark Fleury on a sacrifice. Kyle Shelton and Chad Flack would be the two scoring for UNC.

FSU would take the lead in the top of the third and until the bottom of the seventh neither team would do much offensively. In that inning Ackley would single, but then be called out at 2nd on a fielder's choice, putting Shelton on first. Flack would get on when hit by a pitch, Seager would get a single to left center and Shelton would score from it. The two teams would go to the bottom of the ninth tied and would have to play extra innings. FSU came out with nothing in the top of the tenth, but UNC was able to get a run when a couple of walks (one intentional) and a single would load up the bases with no outs. A third walk would score the winning run for North Carolina.

The Heels will now have a break due to exams and then be back playing when they meet North Florida for a two game series on May 6th.
