UNC splits double header with Georgia Tech

. Sunday, April 06, 2008

While there is not much to rejoice about if you're still thinking about the Men's basketball team, there is something to be happy about if you're talking about the baseball team. Chad Flack is now the all time hit leader for the Tar Heels, as #3 North Carolina (25-6, 10-4 in the ACC) split a double header with #14 Georgia Tech (25-7, 9-6 in the ACC).

The Heels took home the first of the two games with a score of 10 to 4, dropping the second 4-1. Flack tied the record in the first game, with two hits (2 of 4 in the game), reaching Chad Prosser at 291 hits. He then broke the record in game two, on a single. The record setting hit also gave the third baseman the hit he needed to keep going on his 14 game hitting streak. With 292 hits Flack is also 21st best in the ACC.

Along with Flack, Kyle Seager hit safely in both games, bringing his streak to 27 games. Seager's achievement stands as the fourth longest in school history. In all Seager had 4 hits and 4 RBIs. Tim Fedroff also had a good day, with three hits, and has an 11 game hitting streak going.

As far as the pitching went, in game one it was all Adam Warren, who is now 5 and 0 for the season (and 18 and 0 for his career). He gave up 3 runs on seven hits (and 2 walks), while striking out seven Yellow Jackets. In all the Heels fanned 13 batters, bringing their 13 or more K's in a game to a fourth straight match. In the nightcap Matt Harvey just couldn't get on track, as he lasted less than four innings, giving up all 4 runs (1 unearned), on 6 hits and 3 walks (he also had 4 K's). The other three pitchers in the game settled things down, allowing no runs, two hits, two walks and seven K's, but the Heel's bats just didn't come alive in this one.

The Heels will be playing two non conference games in Cary. First one: Tuesday against Elon. Second one: Wednesday against North Carolina A&T. Both games are set for a 6 pm start.
