Every team loses once in a while. That's what happened to the 14th ranked North Carolina (47-9-1, 16-2 in the ACC) team in their first game against Virginia Tech (40-12, 16-3 in the ACC) this weekend. And while the Lady Heels were winning the second game it had to be halted due to rain and will be completed tomorrow before the start of the third game of the series.
The first game was hard fought and very long, to say the least, as the two teams battled for ten innings until the Hokies were able to get three runs across and win the game. In the circle it was Lisa Norris who started the game, going 4 innings, allowing 1 earned run on 3 hits and 4 walks. The pitcher was also able to strike out 4 opponents. Amber Johnson (12-2) took over and got the loss going 5.1 innings, allowing 4 runs (3 earned) on seven hits and one walk, while striking out one.
The normally lively bats for the Lady Heels were sluggish today, as only four hits were produced by the team. Cassie Palmer went 1 for 4 with an RBI and a run scored. Danielle Spaulding also went 1 for 4 with an RBI while two other teammates got the rest of the hits. In all it wasn't the type of production that this team has been giving out of late.
Tomorrow the two teams will meet once again to finish the second game, which has the Heels ahead by two runs, and then to play the third game of the series.
