It is that coach speak or talk that most people always shrug when they use it, but in this game between #4 North Carolina (25-7) and Elon (26-7) that coach mambojumbo came into effect. In basketball you need to hit your free throws, in baseball you can not leave men on base, and that is exactly what the Tar Heels did against Elon in Cary today. Carolina left 11 of them, on only six hits, and lost by the score of 2 to 0 at home. This is the first time in over 12 months that the Heels have been shut out.
Patrick Johnson (3-1) allowed two hits, three walks and struck out seven in the five innings he pitched. He gave up one of the two runs, but then buckled down and kep the guest in check for the next three innings. Brian Moran and Rob Wooten stepped in after to finish the game, striking out four more, and of course allowing the second of two runs that Elon got.
On the offensive side Tim Federowicz was probably one of the few bright spots, getting two hits on the day. Both Kyle Seager and Chad Flack broke their hitting streaks as they could not get one against Elon. Tim Fedroff was out due to illness.
The Heels close an 11 game home stand tomorrow against North Carolina A&T at 6 p.m. EST.
