Lady Heels take two from in state rival on Senior Day

. Sunday, April 20, 2008

The Lady Heels softball team managed to win a double header against in state rival the Wolfpack on Senior Day by the slightest of margins in both games. North Carolina (44-8-1, 15-1 in the ACC) beat N.C. State (27-22, in the 8-9) 1-0 in both games in front of a record setting crowd of 1,251. With the two wins the Lady Heels are now riding a 15 game winning streak.

In the first game it was all about one player, Danielle Spaulding (13-2), who threw a shutout on the mound against N.C. State, the fifth of the season for her. Then, on offense she provided the Lady Heels with the only run they scored, when she hit a home run in the bottom of the sixth. Spaulding gave up three hits and walks over the seven innings. She did over strike out 9 as well. Her home run was one of the only two hits that the Lady Heels had in the game, with Emily Troup getting the other one.

In the second game it was Lisa Norris (16-3) in the circle for the Lady Heels. She tossed a one hit game, allowing two walks and striking out three. The Heels bats didn't do much more than in game one, as they only got three hits in this game. It was a double by Emily Troup, a sacrifice bunt by Alyssa Francona to get her over to third and then on a passed ball Anna Roberts (who came in to pinch run for Troup) scored the only run.

Today the Lady Heels finish their three game series with the Wolfpack. After that the Lady Heels will travel to Rock Hill, S.C. on Wednesday to play Winthrop in a doubleheader. Beyond that it's a battle with Virginia Tech, where beating the Hokies in at least one game will make the Heels regular season champs. So stay tuned for many great games (and my recaps) and once again, congratulations to all the seniors on Senior Day!
